What is it?

Developed from Dr Stephen Porges’ The Polyvagal Theory, The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-based therapy showing significant results from five hours of listening to specially processed (digitally filtered) music. Originally developed to help those who have everyday challenges that may come with Autism, it was discovered that it has beneficial outcomes for people who have experienced trauma in all forms.

How Can it help?

Improvements are commonly seen in some or all of the following areas:

·         Social and emotional difficulties

·         Auditory sensitivities

·         Anxiety and trauma-related challenges

·         Inattention

·         Speech and Language processing (receptive and expressive)

·         Stressors that impact social engagement

·         Sleep

·         Picky eating

The SSP is a way to calm or regulate the fight or flight reflex that we all experience. For some, this reflex is hyper-aroused causing the individual to feel unsafe in their everyday environments.

How is it delivered?

The therapy can be delivered either in person or remotely using the latest technology. There would be an initial consultation for pre-assessments and to determine the length and pace of the session delivery.

“This therapy was recommended to me by a friend of mine. I was unsure how listening to sounds and talking to Natilie would help my Autistic son. He is a good communicator I thought until I completed the parental questionnaire and I thought how can a complete stranger know what questions to ask and why didn't I notice or know the answers to the questions. You don't realize how much you adapt to your child's needs and that this could prevent them from growing. My son was good with the IT to enable these sessions to go on virtually whilst I was in the next room if Natilie needed to communicate anything to me. So I felt the sessions were private but also monitored. The change in my son, since the sessions, was amazing. He seemed more eager to start conversations and not always about topics he liked. He seemed to have more confidence in talking about his needs and wants. He was prepared to try new things and has successfully gone to college and met that new challenge. This was not a short-lived change as it has been over a year and with the changes going on as a teenager and in the current state of the world, he has remained communicative, more self-confident, and vocal about himself. It can be challenging sometimes when he is expressing himself because his point of view is not always straightforward or easy to understand but we get there. I am sure without this therapy we would not be in the situation we are today with him and his anxiety levels would be much higher and less easy to understand. Once you understand you can try and reduce the levels. I don't know how it works but from this parent’s point of view, it does not matter because it works and it was not intrusive. Natilie is so easy to talk to it made it a lot easier. Thank you.”

“I worked with Natilie on hypermobility issues I was having. Natilie helped me uncover some significant connections between what was going on for me and experiences from my past. Following the session I felt much more solid and comfortable in my body. It was a pleasure to work with Natilie, I felt very comfortable and safe and was impressed by her knowledge and skills.”

Counselling

&

Play Therapy

By addressing children’s emotional, behavioural and mental health needs at an early stage, it is possible to remove barriers to learning and lay the foundations for making healthy life choices in teenage and adult years
— The Place2be

What is it?

Play therapy is to children what counselling is to adults and adolescents. Play therapy utilizes play, children's natural medium of expression, to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words. The positive relationship that develops between therapist and child during therapy sessions can provide a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing.

Possible reasons for referral

  • Becoming subdued or overexcited; marked mood swings, behaviour that is ‘out of character’

  •  Have difficulties due to family breakdown.

  •  Peer group difficulties /relationships.

  • Have been bereaved or suffered loss or separation.

  •  Low self-esteem.

  • Anxiety

  • Self-harm e.g. cutting

  • School refusal.

  • Those who bully others and those who are victims of bullying behaviour.

  • Are known or who are suspected to have been sexually, physically or emotionally abused

  • Children and adolescents that are adopted or looked after

How can it help?

Through therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviour, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Play provides a safe psychological distance from their problems and allows the expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate to their development.

How is it delivered?

Sessions are delivered one to one in a safe, consistent, and confidential space. This can be once a week or more depending on the child’s level of need.

A Systemic Approach.

All of the services listed can be delivered separately or in a beautiful complimentary combination in a way that suits you and your family. For example:

  • Play therapy can be more affective if the autonomic nervous system is regulated and in a receptive state which is what the SSP allows for

  • A parent or carer can clear any generational trauma for their children or create harmony in their relationship by working through it in the Energy Alignment and Quantum Healing session

“We were referred to Natilie for Play Therapy with our adopted son (8 years old) who experiences attachment and behavioural difficulties. Natilie has an immediate warm and nurturing approach, with a breadth of professional expertise. Natilie helped us as parents understand the impacts of trauma for example and recommendations for sensory aids. Natilie provided a safe, calm and engaging setting for our son to express himself and help his self-regulation. Natilie has supported our family in the last two years, with great insight and empathy. Our son developed a good relationship with Natilie and has had a very positive connection. We have learnt a lot about brain development with guidance and tools that help throughout our daily family life and external environments for which we are very grateful.”

— Laura & Matt, parents of Play Therapy and SSP client
